About Brí

Brí represents all people affected by brain injury

Brí is independent -

  • independent of the Dept of Health and the HSE
  • independent of agencies providing care services under contract to the HSE or privately.

We are people affected by brain injury -

  • having experienced brain injuries ourselves

Or

  • we are family members or carers of people with brain injuries

We are a charity organisation based on the grounds of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Rochestown Avenue, DunLaoghaire, Co. Dublin.

What we do:

  • We mutually support and inform one another about living positively with brain injury.
  • Support groups around Ireland. Click here for a support group near you and further information on our groups.
  • Phone & email support. This is provided by trained staff and is available Monday to Friday at 9:00am – 5:00pm. Contact us for support
  • providing information through our website, newsletter and publications
  • Brain injury identity card – This card is for people with brain injury. It has a photo of the person and their contact information on the front. On the back of the card there is a statement saying "I am a survivor of a brain injury, I have problems which are not apparent, your help and patience would be appreciated." We have found this card has benefited our members, especially those with speech difficulties. To apply for a brain injury identity card click here
  • Using personal knowledge and insight, we advocate to the government, to the HSE, to others, about good care and services needed by people and families living with brain injury.
  • We hold carers’ “support & pampering” events, which give caring discussion time and then focus on being pampered, for an afternoon’s occasion of happy respite!
  • We hold information events about brain injury topics.
  • We organise prevention – minded Initiatives concerning head injuries with school students.
  • We represent people with brain injuries independently, from our informed insiders perspective.
  • We look forward to finding and taking new initiatives for making brain injuries better understood, for enabling individuals and families to cope well with brain injuries through -

►timely & expert acute medical care

             ►access to quality-checked rehabilitation

             ►relevant effective living support services

►more active mutual support and information

Our Mission:

Our mission in Brí is to help one another with positive support and insightful information about living with brain injury, to advocate knowledgeably and independently. We strive to focus on improvements in self-support, medical care, rehabilitation, public awareness and prevention.

Our History:

Brí’s formation came from a huge public meeting in 1999 at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dún Laoghaire. The enormous lack or services and of awareness about Brain Injury were highlighted. People at the meeting unanimously resolved to join together for independent, informed, insightful self advocacy. Brí became a limited company with charitable status in 2003.

Membership:

We are a membership organisation –membership costs a single Euro.

While we involve many people without requiring membership, we now ask that you do sign up for our counted membership, adding to our force in advocacy.  Download a membership form here
