Driving takes a lot of skill. These skills are controlled by different parts of the brain. After a brain injury, the time it takes to recover these skills can be different for each person and sometimes full recovery does not occur.
Returning to driving after a brain injury
Step 1
Always seek medical clearance from your consultant/Doctor. If you do not get medical clearance, your insurance cover is invalid following a brain injury.
Step 2
You may be advised to take an off road driving assessment to assess your driving skills. Speak with your consultant regarding your skills that may have been effected through your injury.
Step 3
Complete an on road driving assessment , this can be organised through a registered driving instructor or if you are or have been a patient of the National Rehabilitation Hospital, they can organise this for you free of charge.
Step 4
Inform your insurance company. Once you have received medical clearance, your insurance company cannot increase your premium because you have had a brain injury.
